Peterson Air Force Base is located in Colorado Springs, Colorado and is home to the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM). The base was established in 1942 and was originally known as Colorado Springs Army Air Base. It was renamed in 1948 in honor of 1st Lt. Edward J. Peterson, a pilot who died during a training flight in 1942.
